Microsoft is making headway with the building process of Windows 7, the next iteration of the Windows client, and is gearing up to release a development milestone of the operating system at the end of next month.

Microsoft's professional Developers Conference in Las Vegas, between October 27-30, 2008 will be synonymous with the broadening of the Windows 7 testing program past the limited testing pool of the company's close partners that was given access to early builds including Milestone 1, Milestone 2 and Milestone 3.The Redmond giant will in fact offer a pre-Beta build of Windows 7 to all PDC2008 participants. "We're (...) giving every attendee a pre-beta copy of Windows 7. Yes, you heard that right. You'll be able to install your own copy of Windows 7 and play with it on your hardware. This is a very limited release, and PDC2008 attendees will be the first to get it. Gotta love the PDC," revealed Mike Swanson, Microsoft technical evangelist.

In just one month Microsoft plans to deliver the first consistent taste of Windows 7. The company demonstrated the operating system's touch computing capabilities earlier this year, Microsoft continued to be mute on the matter. At PDC2008 Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, will be the one to introduce Windows 7 to the world.

"In our first keynote at PDC2008 Ray Ozzie will talk about the new world of Software Plus Services, with Bob Muglia joining him, to unveil our new Cloud Computing platform," Microsoft revealed. "In a second keynote, Ray will return to talk about building immersive user experiences and introduce Steven Sinofsky, who will give developers a first look at the next version of Windows, Windows 7. Scott Guthrie and David Treadwell will join Ray and Steven to dive deep on the latest Win32 and .NET platform advances that enable a next generation of user experiences spanning multiple devices, including a look at the latest developments in .NET, Silverlight, "Live Mesh", and the rest of the client platform."

Windows 7 Milestone 3 out of Redmond, it was only a matter of time before the latest release of the next iteration of the Windows client would share the same fate as Milestone 1, dropped in December 2007. Believe it or not but the Ultimate Extras for the high-end edition of Windows Vista have come out of a coma. When all hope seemed lost, Microsoft delivered signs of life on the Ultimate Extras front. In this context, users of the Windows Vista ultimate SKU will be able to enjoy a new game, sound scheme as well as a collection of fresh content for DreamScene. All the new Extras have been released via the Windows updating infrastructure, but they are available only for the Ultimate edition of Vista.

We are excited to announce that 3 new Windows Ultimate Extras are now available for installation via Windows Update! This is the 6th wave of Ultimate Extras released by Microsoft exclusively for Windows Vista Ultimate users," revealed Christopher Flores, director, Windows Communications.

The Ultimate Extras never quite managed to rise up to the expectations of Windows Vista Ultimate users. In this context, the releases are yet another example of Microsoft over-promising with Vista but under-delivering. However, at the same time, the Redmond company stuck to a repetitive mantra, insisting that additional new Ultimate Extras would continue to be shipped in the future, an aspect that has not changed. Flores indicated that Microsoft was indeed working on more Ultimate Extras, but failed to specify any consistent details, including an estimated availability date.

"Microsoft Tinker is a casual game that provides players with short puzzle game play sessions set in a warm, calming environment. Ultimate Extras Sounds from Microsoft Tinker: Based on the positive feedback we received from the release of additional Windows Sound Schemes in April, we've integrated the unique audio sounds from Microsoft Tinker into a new sound scheme. Windows DreamScene Content Pack #4 Windows DreamScene Content Pack #4 which adds three additional nature-setting Windows DreamScenes," Flores added.

With the availability of Windows 7 pre-Beta confirmed for late October 2008, micosoft has also delivered additional details related to the agenda of the Professional Developer Conference 2008 in Las Vegas
Between October 27-30, the Los Angeles Convention Center will host no less than 22 sessions focused on the next iteration of the Windows Client. This week, Microsoft has added 17 new information sessions to the existing five. But at the same time, the Redmond giant is still failing to reveal all that much about what it will discuss quasi-publicly in just one month.

In this context, there are a variety of items on the PDC2008 agenda on which no details have been made public. Windows 7: Building Great Communications Applications by Larry Osterman is one of them. Larry Osterman, who is a Principal software development  Engineer, revealed that “the primary target for my talk is developers who are building an application that in any way communicates between users (voice mail, instant messaging, voice over ip, etc). In addition, if you’re a games developer or a media player developer, you should also attend, there’s stuff in the talk for you too. There are also some other cool talks included in the list that I’m absolutely planning on attending”.

At the same time, Microsoft was shy about revealing anything related to the “New Shell User Experience APIs”, “New APIs to Find, Visualize, and Organize”, “New Text and Graphics APIs" and “New APIs for Building Context-Aware Applications”. Details on all these application programing interfaces for Windows 7 will be published at a later date.

Here are the additional 14 sessions which do feature abstracts, courtesy of Microsoft:

“1. Windows 7: Developing Multi-touch Applications (Reed Townsend)

In Windows 7, innovative touch and gesture support will enable more direct and natural interaction in your applications. This session highlights the new multi-touch gesture APIs and explains how you can leverage them in your applications.

    2. Writing Your Application to Shine on Modern Graphics Hardware (Anantha Kancherla)

This session centers on the new enhancements to DirectX that enable Win32 applications harness the latest innovations in modern graphics hardware. You will learn how to use the Windows 7 graphics infrastructure to enable your applications to display graphics content on different generations of graphics hardware, across multiple displays and on a remote desktop. Also learn how you can test your application for DPI awareness, what to look for, and how to make it provide the best experience on high-DPI displays.

    3. Unlocking the GPU with Direct3D (Allison Klein)

This session will teach you how to use the latest version of Direct3D to unlock the rendering and computing power of the GPU and to target the wide variety of hardware used by your customers. Learn techniques for integrating this high-performance 3D graphics pipeline within your Win32 applications.

    4. Benefiting from Documents and Printing Convergence (Jesse McGatha)

Discover how updating your printing infrastructure to XPS allows your application to seamlessly bridge across both electronic and physical paper and benefit from new document workflow and interoperability scenarios.

    5. Designing Efficient Background Processes (Vikram Singh)

Inefficient background activity has a dramatic impact on system performance, power consumption, responsiveness, and memory footprint. This session demonstrates best practices for background process design and will dive deep on the capabilities of the Service Control Manager (SCM) and Task Scheduler. Attendees will also learn how to use new Windows 7 infrastructure to develop efficient background tasks.

    6. Design Principles for Windows 7 (Samuel Moreau)

Together, we can increase customer enthusiasm, satisfaction and loyalty by designing user experiences that are both desirable and harmonious. In this session, we will introduce the Windows User Experience Principles approach to shipping software. Along the way we will share stories and lessons learned along the journey of designing the user model and experience for Windows 7, and leave you with a set of principles that you can apply as you build your applications for Windows.

    7. Integrate with the Windows 7 Desktop Taskbar (Rob Jarrett)

This session dives into new APIs that enable integration with the latest Windows desktop features. Learn about new extensibility methods to surface your application's key tasks. Discover how enhancements to the taskbar, Start Menu, thumbnails and their desktop elements provide new ways for you to delight your users. This talk is a must for application developers who wan to provide the best user experience for their applications on Windows 7.

    8. Welcome to the Windows 7 Desktop (Chaitanya Sareen)

The Windows desktop is evolving-is your application ready to evolve also? This session sets the stage for exciting enhancements to the taskbar, Start Menu, and other desktop elements.

    9. Deploying Your Application with Windows Installer (MSI) and ClickOnce (Tyler Robinson)

If you are a developer involved in the creation of application deployment packages using Windows Installer (MSI) or ClickOnce, this session is for you. Learn how you can take advantage of new features in Windows 7 to shorten application installation times, reduce UAC prompts, write less custom code, take less time to write installations for complex packages, and much more!

    10. Deep Dive - What's New with Win32's user32 and comctl32 (Raymond Chen)

Hear about the lowest level user interface components (user32, comctl32) that appear in almost every Windows application. You'll learn about "recent" changes and enhancements in these subsystems, plus be subjected to some philosophical musings on how foreground activation is like love. (No really, it will actually help you write better software.)

    11. Programming Sync Providers that Work Great with Windows (Moe Khosravy, Jason Roberts)

In this session, learn how you can enable your application to synchronize with other applications that use the Microsoft Sync Framework. This session will cover how to implement sync for contacts and other PIM data, how to package sync providers for distribution and installation, and how to register sync provider for use on Windows.

    12. Using Instrumentation and Diagnostics to Develop High Quality Software

Learn how to enhance the quality and supportability of your software during developing and deployment using the Windows 7 instrumentation and diagnostic platforms. This session will focus on key aspects of the event and performance counter infrastructures, and discuss best practices around adding instrumentation to your code. We will introduce the new Windows PowerShell-based diagnostic platform, and how it enables you to easily monitor multiple data sources to empower the end user and IT pro to detect and resolve software problems.

    13. Best Practices for Developing for Windows Standard User (Cezar Ungureanasu)

The application development requirements in Windows 7 for UAC-compatibility are exactly the same as in Vista: Vista-compatible applications will interact with UAC in Windows 7 without any modification. No new APIs are required or provided. The UAC improvements for Win7 will impact the user's experience but not the application interface. Logo requirements regarding UAC compatibility are the same as in Vista.

    14. Writing World-Ready Applications

This session centers on globalization features for Windows 7, including sorting and string comparison, locale support, and coverage for new languages, with an eye to helping developers extend their applications to a global user base. This session introduces the Extended Linguistic Services API, the next step in the evolution of globalization support for Windows developers. This session will also cover the Multilingual User Interface (MUI) technology inside Windows 7 and .NET, and walk you through an end-to-end look at how to make your application MUI-enabled so that you can easily take your application worldwide and extend your customer base into new language markets”

The latest build seems quite stable. The Ribbon user interface from Office 2007 is now part of WordPad and Paint. Home Groups — the functionality formerly known in “Longhorn”/Vista as “Castle” — is part of the new Windows 7 build.

The “Graphical Console,” a k a PowerShell Version 2, seems to be part of the latest pre-release Windows 7 build

Sources say there isn’t an “M4? currently on Microsoft’s Windows 7 schedule. Next up is likely some kind of preview build (which may or may not be distributed to those attending the Professional Developers Conference and/or Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in October and November, respectively.) After that, a broadscale Beta 1, which should be feature-complete and pretty much set in stone, is expected for mid-December

Generation Y is making the most out of the Internet. While older generations may value in-person face time over reaching out online, Gen Y doesn't have the same hang up. They want more content. They want it faster. They want it in clean resolution. And they want it on as many devices as possible.

That means your kids may be spending hours on sites with names that look like typographical errors. Why care? If you want to be hip--and if you want to tap into some of the free music, games and other gimmes that companies are churning out for the younger crowd, you should follow them to these sites

What a difference a few years make!

Almost three-quarters of Americans spend time online. As the Internet has come into its own as a richly complex media source, just what people choose to do online has become as different and nuanced as what they do in their offline lives. But in a recent survey of consumer technology

A number of trends in how people use technology divide along generational lines

Baby boomers, for example, only spend around five hours a week online.

The Internet's first generation, Gen X, or the 29- to 42-year-old demographic, spends eight hours of personal time a week online. Mainly drawn to product reviews and e-mail, Gen Xers haven't found much use for some of the Internet's more recent innovations like blogs and social networking

But how people use technology divide along generational lines.

Baby boomers, for example, only spend around five hours a week online

The Internet's first generation, Gen X, or the 29- to 42-year-old demographic, spends eight hours of personal time a week online. Mainly drawn to product reviews and e-mail, Gen Xers haven't found much use for some of the Internet's more recent innovations like blogs and social networking.

Eighty percent of the 38 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 28--the Gen Y crowd--are online. They typically spend 10 hours a week online--but they're not spending as much time doing comparison shopping. "Gen Y is doing more online and they're doing it more frequently

Gen Yers are pushing the technological envelope as the most voracious consumers of streaming videos and blogs. They're the first to discover the latest innovations in, say, searching for music or other interests. They're twice as likely as older adults to watch Internet TV and reasonably comfortable managing social relationships online. Instead of Tivo, Gen Y consumers are checking out streaming video sites like Hulu

Rather than waiting for editors at classic journalistic establishments to come up with headlines, Gen Yers are sharing the stories they like most on sites such as Digg and StumbleUpon

Half of all Gen Y Internet users belong to at least one social networking site. Even blogs seem clunky to them; instead they're taking advantage of services such as Twitter to pour out intimate details about their life, loves and other bodily functions

Only one in four adults (from the Gen Y group and older) who spend time online has ever been to a social networking site

online obsession as a fad of youth--and a habit that will fade over time. "As we get older, we realize more and more the importance of physically being in the presence of friends and family

It's not to say that Gen X doesn't love its high-tech toys. The 29- to 42-year-old crowd buys more high-definition televisions and are more likely to have digital video recorders in their homes

Gen Y doesn't lead in everything

"They do have significant income restrictions."

    Hulu.com

    Type: Streaming Video

Launched just this past March as News Corp. and Universal's attempt to make some revenue off this new-fangled Internet phenomenon, Hulu lets you watch full episodes and clips of popular network shows. In some cases, you can even watch full seasons or full runs of entire shows. (Hint: You can stream every episode of "Arrested Development.") You can also watch full movies. It's only available in the U.S. for now though, and you will endure the occasional ad

A bastion of the quirky and cool, Digg's constantly updating front page is likely to feature anything from bizarre pictures and political commentary to sex advice and instructional videos. On 6 September 2006, Ruchi Sanghvi announced a new home page feature called News Feed. Originally, when users logged into Facebook, they were presented with a customizable version of their own profile. The new layout, by contrast, created an alternate home page in which users saw a constantly updated list of their friends' Facebook activity. News Feed highlights information that includes profile changes, upcoming events, and birthdays, among other updates. News Feed also shows conversations taking place between the walls of a user's friends. An integral part of the News Feed interface is the Mini-Feed, a news stream on the user's profile page that shows updates about that user. Unlike in the News Feed, the user can delete events from the Mini-Feed after they appear so that they are no longer visible to profile visitors.
Initially, the addition of the News Feed caused some discontent among Facebook users. Many users complained that the News Feed was too cluttered and full of undesired information. Others were concerned that the News Feed made it too easy for other people to track activities like changes in relationship status, events, and conversations with other users. In response to this dissatisfaction, creator Mark Zuckerberg issued an apology for the site's failure to include appropriate customizable privacy features. Thereafter, users were able to control what types of information were shared automatically with friends. Currently, users may prevent friends from seeing updates about several types of especially private activities, although other events are not customizable in this way

The constant wave of Windows 7 Beta chatter from Redmond
even without an official confirmation from Microsoft, is a clear indication that the company is gearing up
to move the next iteration of the Windows client beyond the development milestone (M) stages

With the Windows 7 roadshow approaching at a fast pace, as Microsoft is getting closer and closer to events such as the Professional Developer Conference 2008 (October), Windows Hardware Engineering Conference 2008 (November) and TechEd 2008 EMEA (November), the first Beta build of the operating system is starting to take contour. Still, Windows 7 Beta 1 will not make it to the October and November conferences, as it is planned for availability in mid-December 2008.

Microsoft has failed to either confirm or deny this piece of information at this point in time, but according to Mary Jo Foley, citing unnamed sources, Windows 7 beta 1 will drop just ahead of Christmas 2008. On Vista WinHEC 2008 homepage, Microsoft is claiming that Windows 7 “is coming soon” but doesn't give any indication of the actual deadline, although it is rushing hardware manufacturers to get ready for the operating system.

The Redmond giant released the first taste of Windows 7 back in December 2007. At that time, Milestone 1 was virtually indistinguishable from Windows Vista. Moving forward into the development process, the Redmond company has also produced a Milestone 2 Build of Windows 7, which was kept tight under wraps and wasn't leaked like M1. The next move as far as the evolution of Windows 7 is concerned is a Milestone 3 release, which in its turn will be followed by the first Beta build of the platform. One thing is for sure, under the leadership of Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, Windows 7 will have a short Beta life, approximately a year. Microsoft is reportedly not preparing a wide release of Windows 7 Beta until the client is either feature-complete or very close to the final version.

Just as is the case today with Windows Vista and Windows XP
Microsoft is preparing to harvest end user feedback from the first Beta build of Windows 7

According to Christina Storm, a program manager on the Windows Customer Engineering feature team, the next iteration of the Windows client will simply continue the Windows Feedback Program (WFP) set in place for XP and Vista. Storm indicated that Microsoft is in fact tailoring WFP in order to fit Windows 7, starting as early as the Beta 1 development milestone. Microsoft is currently not accepting any new participant in the WPF, and hasn't been since early 2007.

“Customers choose to be part of a survey program, an automated feedback program or both. They then complete a 20-minute profiling survey, which later allows us to look at their feedback based on their profile. We have customers spanning a wide spectrum of computer
knowledge in our program, and we are constantly working on balancing the panel to staff up underrepresented groups. The majority of customers who are spontaneously willing to participate in a feedback program like ours are generally enthusiastic about technology. They are early adopters of consumer electronics, digital devices and new versions of software. In contrast, customers who see the PC as a tool to get a job done tend to be a bit more reluctant to join,” Storm stated.

According to Microsoft, all the participants in the WFP, be it for Windows Vista, or for Windows 7, have to install a data collection tool built by the Windows Telemetry Team. The utility has the purpose to automate the feedback collecting process. At this point in time, Microsoft is preparing its feedback infrastructure for the advent of Windows 7 Beta 1.

“When we release the Windows 7 beta we will also be collecting feedback from this panel [the Windows Feedback Program] and asking for participation from a set of Windows 7 beta users. Our current plans call for signing up for the beta to happen in the standard Microsoft manner on Microsoft Connect,” Storm concluded

Even as early as July 5, 2007, Microsoft announced that it was extending north of Redmond and into Canada

At that time S. Somasegar, corporate vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft, indicated that the new Microsoft Canada Development Centre would be a nucleus of top talent, and that it would house no less than the next generation of leading software developers. The Redmond giant managed to deliver on its initial plans, which indicated a fall 2008 inauguration for the center. As of September 10, 2008, the Microsoft Canada Development Centre is open for business.

“The Microsoft Canada Development Centre is located in Richmond, British Columbia. Its offices are situated in two buildings totaling 73,000 square feet in the Crestwood Corporate Centre, one of the leading business parks in the Greater Vancouver Area. The Microsoft Canada Development Centre first opened its doors in July 2007 with 20 employees. Today, the Centre employs more than 300 people from 45 different countries who speak 15 languages,” Microsoft revealed.

The software giant revealed that the first Canadian development center's 300 strong workforce is made up of the best software developers in the world. Designed to operate as centers located in North Carolina, Ireland, Denmark and Israel, MCDC will be involved in the development of over 50% of Microsoft's products, including the Windows operating system
, the Office platform, but also Windows Mobile, Zune and the Xbox 360.

“Type of work undertaken at the Microsoft Canada Development Centre includes: Software Development; Software Testing; Program Management; User Interface Design; System Architecture; System Specifications Development; Development of System Tool and IT Infrastructure
Development. Complete list of products software engineers work on at the Microsoft Canada Development Centre: Zune, Xbox 360, Vista, Office, Ad Platform, AD Search, Unified Communications, Exchange Server, Visual Studios, Silverlight,” Microsoft added.

Microsoft is aligning all the Service Pack 3 releases for the various Windows XP versions it continues to support
in terms of what the refreshes will bring

In this context, having made available the SP3 gold bits for the Windows XP client, the Redmond giant has moved forward and is now cooking the third service pack for the embedded version of Windows XP. Windows XP Embedded SP3 is developed in parallel with the successor of XPe, namely Windows Embedded Standard 2009, which is due in the forth quarter of 2008.

“Microsoft Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 3 (SP3) is a roll-up of hot-fixes and security updates MS has released since the release to manufacturing (RTM) of SP2. It includes select out-of-band releases, and a small number of new enhancements, which do not significantly change the customers’ experience with the operating system
. The SP3 update for XP Embedded is on par with the XP Pro SP3 update with regard to the roll-up and inclusion of out-of-band releases,” revealed Gina Bentley, Servicing and Support Program Manager for Microsoft's Vertical Industries and Embedded Windows (VIEW) group.

In this context, it appears that there is little to no difference between the third service packs for the client and embedded versions of Windows XP. And even though Microsoft has already pointed toward the end of 2008 for the availability of Windows Embedded Standard 2009, the company has been reluctant to disclose the delivery deadline for XPe SP3. “There have been no announcements regarding a release date for XP Embedded Service Pack 3,” Bentley added.

Microsoft is currently offering Community Technology Previews of both Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and Windows XP Embedded SP3 for download via Microsoft Connect. “XPe mainstream support will end 2 years after Windows Embedded Standard is released and will be followed by 5 years extended support,” explained Luca Amapane, Program Manager on the Windows Embedded Standard team

Should Microsoft get into the PC hardware business?

Interview with Microsoft Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich on Microsoft’s TechNet Edge

He covers a wide range of topics, but the one that got my attention is a two-minute snippet near the end, when the interviewer asks whether Mark feels that Microsoft needs to make its own desktop hardware. (If you want to see and hear this discussion for yourself, skip ahead to the 34:03 mark in the video.)

Do you think Microsoft needs to make desktop
hardware or certain desktop/server PC hardware?

There’s a lot of discussion about that – not just in the industry but also within Microsoft. Should we be developing the Windows notebook or the Windows desktop? My opinion is that what’s made Windows so successful is the fact that it’s got an ecosystem with partners that are developing software and doing different things with hardware and software. And for us to kind of block all that [pause] innovation – hate to use that word because it’s so overloaded by marketing these days – to block out that playground that people have to do cool things for customers that we can’t think of or don’t have the agility to do, I think, is not the way Windows has gotten successful. I don’t think it’s even the right thing to do now, even in response to what people see as market pressures coming from other people that are doing that. …

[O]ne of the things that you have seen Windows doing over the last couple years is reaching out and working more closely with the hardware partners, with the OEMs, to make sure that the systems they deliver to users provide a good Windows experience, and not one where it’s Windows loaded up with a bunch of junk. And also that the hardware is designed and capable of running Windows the way it should be run and not “Hey, let’s save a few dollars and put in 512 meg of RAM” instead of the couple gig that really make Windows [perform well] … because when you talk about the amount of cost for that these days it’s marginal but the difference in user experience when you look at that is pretty drastic. So, I think that’s the way that we should continue to operate is to have these deeper partnerships with companies to make sure customers do get a great experience.

The fact that these discussions are happening within Microsoft doesn’t surprise me. It’s one of the most obvious responses to Apple’s success, and it’s also in keeping with what Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer wrote in his all-hands memo that was leaked to the press back in July:

In the competition between PCs and Macs, we outsell Apple 30-to-1. But there is no doubt that Apple is thriving. Why? Because they are good at providing an experience that is narrow but complete, while our commitment to choice often comes with some compromises to the end-to-end experience. Today, we’re changing the way we work with hardware vendors to ensure that we can provide complete experiences with absolutely no compromises.

Apple makes a handful of systems using basically the same parts, and they sell the hardware, software, and support as a package. That makes it easy for them to deliver systems that work reliably and can be supported at their stores by technicians with a minimum of training. But it also means that I have limited choices if I want to buy a system running the Mac OS. I can’t buy an Apple-powered tablet, or a small and light notebook (the MacBook Air is thin and light, but it’s not small), or a powerful and expandable small-form-factor desktop. All of those choices are available to me in the PC marketplace, but they come with other tradeoffs, such as crapware and driver hassles.

five suggestions to see incorporated into Vista and especially into Windows 7

Number 1 on the list was a request to make Windows licensing and activation simpler. I noted:

It is almost impossible for mere mortals to understand the nuances of OEM SLP activation and why the product key on the sticker on the side of your PC won’t work after you reinstall Windows. Corporations can pay people to figure this stuff out. Consumers and small business people shouldn’t have to.

Today, as I was poking around Microsoft’s OEM Partner Center (restricted to enrolled members only), I found a perfect example of how much confusion surrounds the subject of licensing.

Back in August 2005, Microsoft made some substantial changes to its license for OEM System Builder copies of Windows. Previously, the terms for these Windows versions were simply ridiculous. You could buy an OEM copy of Windows from a reseller such as Newegg or Mwave, but only if you purchased a “qualifying non-peripheral computer hardware component” with it. As a result, resellers had to go through the charade of bundling a 99-cent power cable to make the purchase legal, and then they had to keep a record of the bundled purchase in case Microsoft did an audit of their sales.

As I noted back then, the new license terms were considerably saner. Microsoft introduced a single-pack edition of its OEM System Builder software and allowed resellers to distribute unopened packages to another “system builder” without requiring a trivial hardware purchase. In the documentation announcing the change in license terms, Microsoft specifically noted that end users could take advantage of this option as well, as long as they were building a system for their own use. The following language was included in a web page at the OEM Partner Center and in a PDF handout made available for OEM partners:

OEM system builder software packs are intended for PC and server
manufacturers or assemblers ONLY. They are not intended for distribution to end users. Unless the end user is actually assembling his/her own PC, in which case, that end user is considered a system builder as well. [emphasis added]

In late 2006, I downloaded that PDF file, bookmarked that web page, and took a snapshot of the page as well, thinking it might come in handy some day. I’ve referred to that language repeatedly when writing about OEM licenses over the past few years, and I’ve checked those pages as recently as December 2007.

Microsoft's "out-of-box experience" priority means no roles for Windows 7

I had hoped that Microsoft would take a role-based approach to Windows 7. But, there won't be roles, according to a Saturday blog post by Steven Sinofsky, senior veep of the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group. He gave some pretty good reasons.

In the post, Steven explains that customers well received Windows Server
2008's role-based approach. "The desktop PC (or laptop) is different because there is only a single PC and the roles are not as well defined. Only in the rarest cases is that PC dedicated to a single purpose," Steven writes.

"In nearly every study we have ever done, just about every PC runs at least one piece of software that other people do not run," he continues. "So we should take away from this the difficulty in even labeling a PC as being role specific."

Steven regards the PC for the unique device that it is. Most products are created to do one or two things. The PC is unusual in that it's like a Swiss Army Knife that can do many things pretty well.

Steven is best known for his role working on Microsoft Office, where with versions 95 and 97 a role-based installation process didn't work well. He explains:

"We thought we could have a setup wizard ask you how much you used Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, or a taxonomy that asked you a profession (lawyer, accountant, teacher). From that we were going to pick not just which applications but which features of the applications we would install. We consistently ran into two problems. First, just arriving at descriptors or questions to 'categorize' people failed consistently in usability tests...Second, we always had the problem of either multiple users of the same PC or people who would change roles or usage patterns. It turns out our corporate customers learned this same thing for us and it became routine to install everything.'"

For Seven—as I assume for previous Windows versions—Microsoft is very concerned with what Steven called the OOBE, or out-of-box experience. "For Windows 7 we are working closely with our OEM partners to make sure it is possible to deliver the most streamlined experience possible," he writes. "This goal would run counter to introducing a 'profiling' or wizard help [to] gauge the intended (at time of purchase) uses/usage of a PC."

He's right that the out-of-box experience is crucially important. First impressions can make or break the emotional connection to a product or brand. Microsoft's big problem with Windows Vista is one of bad first impressions. Consumers brought home shiny Vista PCs, only to find that their existing scanners, printers and other devices wouldn't work. There were no drivers, and for some hardware there still are none. Businesses ran into a rash of application compatibility problems. Both customer groups dealt with increased complexity, like User Access Control prompts or changes to the user interface.

"Our context for the out-of-box experience would be that we don't want to introduce complexity there, where customers are least interested in dealing with it as they want to get to the excitement of using their new PC," Steven asserted. He's right. Microsoft doesn't want to do that.

Still, I'm taken aback a bit, because of Windows Vista SKUs. Microsoft's five major versions absolutely assign functional roles and monetary value to them. Business for small and midsize operations; Enterprise for large businesses; Basic for low-cost computing; Premium for most consumers; Ultimate for everything in the box.

With these assigned roles come feature decisions that don't fit well with many customers. Large businesses wanting Vista Enterprise must purchase through Software Assurance. Small businesses looking for BitLocker encryption typically would need Ultimate, since most wouldn't want or meet the volume-licensing requirements.

How to archive your data on disk drives
Archiving on hard drives? Now that disk drives are cheaper per gigabyte than tape cartridges, you might be tempted to archive data on disk drives and stick them on a shelf
The reason: the bits on the hard drive will gradually lose their magnetism, sometimes in as little as 12 months. Disks automatically rewrite marginal data blocks on the fly.
That doesn’t happen when the disk is powered off.

    The big guys do it

Enterprise storage arrays do disk grooming in the background. They also look for bad blocks and other problems that are less painful to fix when the system is running normally.

Some arrays spin down or even power off disks to save power and cooling while extending drive life. These systems include logic to power up drives and check the data on a regular basis.

So leave that drive plugged in!

If you want a couple of extra drives for archiving just buy some USB drives. They are cheap and work with any system. At idle they use about the same power as a nightlight.

    The Storage Bits take

Disk drives are used for archiving all the time. But they aren’t just powered off and put on a shelf.
If you need that, buy a tape drive. Properly stored tapes will last for decades

Microsoft's "out-of-box experience" priority means no roles for Windows 7

had hoped that Microsoft would take a role-based approach to Windows 7.

"We thought we could have a setup wizard ask you how much you used Word, Excel, Powerpoint
and Access, or a taxonomy that asked you a profession (lawyer, accountant, teacher).

Small businesses looking for BitLocker encryption typically would need Ultimate, since most wouldn't want or meet the volume-licensing requirements

Windows Application Specific Glass Colorization? INFO WRITE 7TH SEPTEMBER 2008 FROM DAVID PAUL LOWER

    Windows Application Specific Glass Colorization?

INFO WRITE 7TH SEPTEMBER 2008 FROM DAVID PAUL LOWER

Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the change is global to the system.

The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands?

Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668

A method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

Further more, the summary of this patent says:

Increasing a user experience in an operating environment and additional manners for identification of application windows, property sheets, and dialogs for the user are always under development. Creating real world environments during a user experience facilitates an easier understanding of use of an application window and other user interface elements displayed as part of an operating system. Aspects of the invention include a system for rendering colorization to a glass appearance window frame. Aspects are directed to methods for displaying and/or changing a glass appearance window frame’s visual appearance in the event of an action and/or based upon user-defined or system defined values.

Keeping in mind, that in Vista, the active window has a blurred glass frame while the inactive ones have an opaque one, the color stays the same, which is defined in the Windows Color and Appearance settings of the Operating System. Allowing the color of the glass frame to react to different events/actions could be very interesting. This could mean that the glass frame of an application demanding your attention could blink in a different color rather than the current method of an orange blinking taskbar button. Also, this method would not be just enabled on application windows but also property sheets, dialogue boxes and the sidebar. While it sounds very interactive, I can already hear people complaining about the annoyance.
