VistaGlazz lets you easily modify your Windows Vista installation to use custom styles and modify your Aero style to use the Glass effect on maximized windows.
This is app is extremely simple, but performs an essential and possibly complicated task for Windows Vista customizers. It patches several DLLs that control Vista's appearance so that users can alter Vista to their liking. It's also freeware, making it a viable workaround for those who want to tweak Vista but don't want to pay for it. It also changes Aero so that it stays in effect on maximized screens.

There's not much else to the program. It absolutely will not work with Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidates. If you install Vista Glazz before removing the SP1 RC, simply uninstall the app and then SP1, and then reinstall the program. The interface is basic, there are no skins provided, and the EULA gives off the vague stench of unfounded fear.

Nevertheless, if you're looking for a simple solution to a potential nightmare, Vista Glazz may be the first step you'll need to take to pretty up Vista just the way you want.

    Windows 7 build 6933.winmain.081020 -1842 info & Screenshoots

INFO WRITE 29th OCTOBER 2008 FROM DAVID PAUL LOWER

During the Windows 7 reviewers workshop on Sunday Linda Averett demonstrated the user interface enhancements introduced with Windows 7. Keeping with the trend, Averett described herself as a PC, wearing a red top matching her fall colored desktop with orange and red aero glass tones. The session was an overview of some new features demonstrated on Windows 7 build 6933.winmain.081020-1842. Unfortunately the build that will be handed out to PDC attendees will not feature most of the enhancements I am about to detail. First up was the new Windows 7 desktop. The new desktop includes a thicker taskbar, improved system tray and no sidebar.

The orb on the start menu also glistens after hover over.

Although the look is similar to Vista, the main changes would be demonstrated next, hovering Window display and Jump lists. Averett described the jump lists as a "very addictive feature".

Jump lists are accessible by right clicking on instances in the taskbar and they give you a list of recent documents using the recent documents API. Jump lists are also available on the start menu.

Averett went on to demo the new Windows Media player controls from the taskbar. You can skip, play tracks and fully control the WMP experience from the new taskbar control.

Snap to side is the next major UI enhancement meaning if you have 2 windows open you can tile them easily by snapping them to the side. This also works by dragging the window up to the top of the monitor and snapping it to the top (maximising it). Interestingly in the demonstrations we saw when windows were maximised the glass effect was still visible. You can also see some of the latest Windows 7 touch advancements where jump lists are 25% larger than when used with the mouse and flick gestures are evident. When Sinofsky was asked if this violated Apple's patents he said he could not discuss any legal issues.

Another great new feature named in the Windows 7 build as "preview desktop" but described as "peek into desktop", allows you to see through windows and straight onto the desktop. Interestingly Microsoft have decided to remove the Windows Sidebar and simply drop the gadgets onto the desktop.

Averett went on to describe data Microsoft had gathered regarding customising Windows. 30% of people customise their glass colour. Customers and OEMs both care a lot about customisation. Windows 7 boosts what you can do with the glass colour. You can now create theme sets and save them to share with friends and family.

The system tray has also been re-designed allowing users to hide system tray icons if they wish:

Libraries are now included in Windows 7 to help you better manage documents. Libraries is a collection of content like photos, pictures and music. Libraries allow you to add storage and keep the pictures stored locally across lots of drives but have links to the library.

Federated search allows you to search across multiple PCs to pull photos from another photo library on another PC. The new search pane gives you a great preview of documents too within explorer.

HomeGroup is the feature that allows federated search to search across multiple PC libraries. A HomeGroup allows you to easily link Windows 7 computers on your home network so that you can share pictures, music, videos, documents and devices. It also makes them ready to stream media to devices on your home network such as a media extender. You can help protect your HomeGroup with a password, and you can choose what you want to share.

Another demonstration focussed on the new "PlayTo" option that will stream your music from other PCs and other music libraries (including iTunes) to your media receivers or other PCs. Windows Media Player now plays AAC songs that iTunes uses but as Apple does not license FairPlay content Microsoft is unable to provide this functionality. PlayTo also works on pictures and videos.

Device stage was demonstrated next. This is a part of explorer which will demonstrate what a device is and what it can do. It's an opportunity for the device vendor to fully showcase the device and present a photo realistic image of the device. It has a task area at the bottom section where the vendor can provide links to inbuilt applications and device information. Microsoft believes this will transform opportunities for vendors. The entire device stage is an implementation of software + services and devices built inside an XML document.

A new feature in Windows 7 that was not fully demonstrated was the magnifier tool pictured below. This allows users to zoom into specific parts of the desktop.

My first impression of Windows 7 is that it's a great improvement on Vista. It has improved performance, a neat boot screen that fires up devices quicker than before and the improved taskbar and windows management features will help when switching between various applications. Throughtout the rest of PDC Microsoft will be unveiling more information about the Windows 7 desktop improvements. We'll be there so keep an eye out on our PDC section.

ActiveWin and Paul Thurrott have some great reviews too so check them out.

Windows 7: What’s coming for business users

INFO WRITE 29th OCTOBER 2008 FROM DAVID PAUL LOWER

Microsoft showed off publicly for the first time Windows 7 at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) on October 28.

But almost everything shown were consumer-focused features. Does that mean Windows 7 won’t have anything for businesses?

Microsoft officials say Windows 7 will include enterprise functionality, too, even though today’s PDC keynote didn’t highlight it.

(For screen shots of and more information about the M3 pre-beta Windows 7 build that Microsoft is distributing to PDC attendees, check out my ZDNet blogging colleague Ed Bott’s blog. ActiveWin is running a meaty review of the Windows 7 M3 preview. Paul Thurrott has reviews on Windows 7 M3, as well as the Windows 7 Server 2008 R2 pre-beta.)

I asked Mike Nash, Corporate Vice President of Windows Product Management, about what’s coming on the business front — besides the fundamental changes that will benefit all users, like quicker boot speed, support for up to 256 processors and more granular User Account Control management.

    Nash mentioned:

    * Branch Office Caching (hosted server caching)
    * New desktop imaging tools for managing multiple monitors, etc.
    * Bitlocker to go — encryption for removable USB drives
    * AppLocker — better control over which applications are authorized to be used on which machines
    * Direct Access — RPC over HTTPS will be modified to allow users to authenticate to their domain, and access applications and resources without a
VPN I didn’t explain this correctly. Microsoft officials said “This is not related to RPC over HTTPS. It is a new solution to enable remote PCs to stay connected to the corp network whenever they have an internet connection. Here’s more on Direct Access.
    * Native virtual hard disk (VHD) support

(I don’t believe all of these features are enabled in the pre-beta Windows 7 build. I’ll ask Microsoft for clarification.)

Update: Microsoft said all of these features will be in the M3 build, and Direct Access and Branch Office Caching require Windows Server 2008 R2 to work. The M3 of Windows Server 2008 R2 is being distributed to show attendees today, alongside the Windows 7 M3 pre-beta bits.

Microsoft officials said today that the M3 pre-beta of Windows 7 will go to PDC attendees, attendees of the company’s Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in early November, and a select group of other external testers. This is considered an application-programming-interface (API) complete build.

A first public beta of Windows 7, that will be feature-complete, is due “early next year,” company officials said. (My bet? That’s a worst-case date and the public beta will still show up before Christmas this year.) Don’t expect multiple betas: From what officials are hinting, it sounds like there will be one beta, one release candidate and then RTM.

Microsoft still isn’t changing official guidance on when Windows 7 will ship. The official date is three years from general availability of Vista, meaning early 2010. I still believe that’s a worst-case date and we’ll see Windows 7 by the second half of 2009.

Windows Vista Speed Boost - Using a USB Drive

INFO WRITE 27th OCTOBER 2008 FROM DAVID PAUL LOWER

Do you have a USB flash drive laying around? Speed up your Windows Vista with the ReadyBoost feature. It allows you to use that spare space on a USB stick reduce wait time when using Vista.

Basically Windows ReadyBoost allows Vista to use a compatible USB flash drive as cache instead of the hard drive.
Microsoft suggests that you provide enough space on a flash drive for ReadyBoost so that you are in at least a 1:1 ratio with your installed physical RAM. So if you have 1Gig of Ram installed, would be best ot have a 1Gig USB drive, or at minimum 512Meg free of space on it.

Without getting too picky if you have a really old USB drive, see if you can find out the specs for it, it is recommended that the USB drive you have be at least:

  • 5 MB/sec throughput for random 4k reads across the entire device
  • 3 MB/sec throughput for random 512k writes across the entire device

  • Here are some suggestions on compatible Readyboost Flash drives

    Steps to enabling ReadyBoost
    1. Insert the USB drive into one of your computer's USB ports. The AutoPlay dialog box opens a few seconds after plugging the drive in asking you what you want to do. Click "Speed up my system".

    2. A new screen will appear showing the ReadyBoost properties. Select the "Use This Device" option. Then use the slider labeled "Space to reserve for system speed" to reserve the amount of space you would like to assign to ReadyBoost. Use 100% of the USB sticks space if you can.

    3. Click on the Apply and then the OK buttons to finalize the changes. The USB flash drive is now reserved as your ReadyBoost device and will be used as additional cache memory. Just remember to keep the USB stick plugged into the USB port on your PC when it boots up so Vista can detect and use it. You should notice a significant speed boost since accessing the flash drive is faster than accessing the hard drive.

Note: You can verify that ReadBoost was setup on the USB Stick by opening the drive.
You will see a file called ReadyBoost and it will have a file type description of ReadyBoost Cache File. The size of the file will also be the same as what you allocated towards ReadyBoost.

    Also
keep in mind that you can only have one active ReadyBoost usb drive per system.

In order to delete the folder you’ll need to rename it in a command prompt by typing:

    ren " " foldername

That’s not a space in between the quotes. You need to press ALT+1060. You’ll then be able to delete the folder.

    Notes from video:
    - In the Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Win dows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    - Create a new DWORD value named NoClose with a data value of 1.
    - Exit the Registry and reboot in order for the change to take effect.

Remember! You won't be able to shut down Windows in the normal manner from now on, use the shutdown -r or -s command instead from the run field.
If you want to re-enable normal shutdowns, delete the NoClose value from the registry and restart your computer using the shutdown -r.
